What Is Refractive Cataract Surgery?
A leading cause of vision loss around the world, cataracts are classified as cloudiness of the natural lens of the eye. Cataracts generally begin to develop around age 40. To repair foggy regions within the makeup of the lens, the lens must be removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to control cataracts. Board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Leslie Emmert-Buck is highly experienced in using advanced techniques to treat cataracts and help clients regain clear vision. Our highly trained team at Capstone Vision & Aesthetics is pleased to provide refractive cataract surgery, a personalized procedure that utilizes advanced laser technology to precisely remove the cataract. Refractive cataract surgery involves digitally diagramming the eye's surface to make a precise, delicate, scalpel-free incision. This surgery helps those with refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia, by replacing natural lenses with custom IOLs as prescription lenses. These specialty intraocular lenses can help eliminate or decrease one's reliance on prescription glasses or contacts. To learn more about this specialized surgery, schedule a visit with our team in Auburn Hills, MI.
What Can I Expect From Refractive Cataract Surgery?
Refractive cataract surgery can help individuals see clearly again by replacing the lens of the eye. The surgery is a quick treatment usually completed in 15 – 20 minutes. Once your eyes are fully numbed, Dr. Emmert-Buck will make a small incision to remove the cataract and replace it with an IOL that fits your vision needs and lifestyle. After your cataract surgery, you will need to use prescribed eye drops and avoid scratching your eyes while they heal. Many patients notice slightly cloudy vision for a few days after the procedure with clearer vision developing over the next couple of weeks. Our team recommends that clients come back in for 2 – 4 follow-up appointments.

Capstone Vision & Aesthetics Reviews
Dr. Emmert-Buck and staff are amazing. Needed cataract surgery and they walked me thru every step of the way. I also had Lasik performed to correct my nearsightedness. No more glasses or contacts!!! Fantastic Surgeon! Thank you Capstone.
Went in for LASIK consult and we settled on PRK as the path forward. Honestly the best money I think I've ever spent, both in terms of the procedure and who handled the operation. Dr. Emmert-Buck and her staff are all so wonderfully attentive and personable. There was even a self-caused issue after the procedure and Dr. Emmert-Buck was quick with being able to meet me the day it happened and help me resolve the issue. If I ever need touch ups later on in life, I know where I'm going!
Came in for LASIK consult and did PRK with Dr. Leslie Emmert-Buck. She is very nice and reliable person. Happy with what I did and highly recommended.
My visit to get a biannual check up was great. The exams started on time and procedures were explained along the way. Dr. Emmert-Buck explained results of the various exams. The entire team offered a great experience.
Hi I saw Dr Leslie for my Keracornus. She, and her staff we're very nice, patient, and explained in detail about my disease and what options were available. She referred me to kellog eye Institute if I decided to do surgery. She even called at 6pm to let me know that where I stood on the referral. Her receptionist Tanya was so nice. Her assistant was very nice. I thank her for being honest and being very patient. Diane A

Am I A Candidate for Refractive Cataract Surgery?
Candidates for refractive cataract surgery are individuals diagnosed with cataracts who want to improve their vision and reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Ideal candidates are in overall good health and looking for a solution that corrects cataracts while also addressing refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Refractive Cataract Surgery FAQ
What types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) are used in refractive cataract surgery?
Refractive cataract surgery offers a variety of IOL options, including monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses. Monofocal IOLs focus at one distance, typically improving either near or far vision. Multifocal IOLs provide multiple points of focus, allowing for clearer vision at various distances and reducing the need for glasses. Toric IOLs are specifically designed to correct astigmatism, providing sharper vision by compensating for the irregular shape of the cornea.
How does refractive cataract surgery impact the need for glasses or contact lenses?
One of the primary goals of refractive cataract surgery is to reduce or eliminate the dependence on glasses or contact lenses. By selecting the appropriate intraocular lens (IOL) and possibly incorporating additional corrective procedures, the surgery can correct common refractive errors. Many patients find that after surgery, they no longer need glasses for most daily activities, although some may still require them for specific tasks, depending on the IOL chosen.
What should be considered when choosing the type of intraocular lens (IOL) for refractive cataract surgery?
Choosing the right IOL is a crucial decision in refractive cataract surgery, as it will affect your vision quality and lifestyle. Factors to consider include your daily visual needs, such as whether you prioritize distance vision, near vision, or both. Your surgeon will also assess your eye's anatomy, the presence of any pre-existing conditions like astigmatism, and your willingness to adapt to potential visual phenomena like halos or glare that can occur with certain lenses. A thorough discussion with your eye surgeon will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your visual expectations.
